About the place

Political protest and communal art reshape Velkopřevorské náměstí through continuous layers of paint.

The wall stands on Velkopřevorské náměstí across from the French Embassy in Malá Strana. It began as a site for love poems and resistance messages on a stone fountain foundation during communist rule. After an unknown artist painted lyrics and an image of John Lennon, the site became a memorial and an active focal point for free expression.

State police repeatedly coated the masonry in green paint, installed surveillance cameras, and posted night guards to block dissent. Protesters returned immediately after each repainting to write political grievances, eventually clashing with police on Charles Bridge. Authorities condemned the movement as Lennonism, viewing Western cultural symbols as deliberate opposition.

Decades of overpainting erased the original mural under continuous artistic and political messages, including climate emergency declarations and international solidarity tributes. The Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the local municipal district later organized structural renovations to regulate public painting and maintain the site as a managed monument.
