Residents beside the castle complex share their daily perimeter with presidential staff and working state offices.
The fortified complex operates as the daily workplace for the head of state and presidential advisors, who are referred to in national politics simply as Hrad. Beyond state protocol, the walled grounds secure the Bohemian Crown Jewels inside a hidden chamber and preserve the Gothic cathedral of St. Vitus alongside the Basilica of Saint George and Bohemia's earliest convent.
Centuries of dynastic rule shaped the enclosed district through distinct structural layers. Benedikt Rejt added the monumental Vladislav Hall to the Royal Palace, while Habsburg rulers commissioned the Belvedere summer residence and the Spanish Hall to house imperial art collections. The grounds also witnessed the Defenestration of Prague, which triggered the Bohemian Revolt and extensive European warfare.
Following national independence, architect Jože Plečnik redesigned the gardens and presidential apartments for Tomáš Masaryk before modern construction finished the cathedral. Long-term residents discover that the compound is neither an open civic park nor a static museum. Security checks, official motorcades, and state functions routinely alter daily access through the courtyards and surrounding lanes.
