About the place

Charles Bridge stands as the historic stone crossing linking the Old Town with the western riverbank.

Emperor Charles commissioned the stone arch bridge to replace the flood-damaged Judith Bridge, creating a permanent crossing between opposite banks. The structure witnessed severe combat when invading Swedish forces clashed with defenders on the roadway, ruining gothic carvings on the Old Town Bridge Tower, where severed heads of executed anti-Habsburg leaders had hung after the Battle of White Mountain.

Baroque statues lining the balustrades gave the bridge its distinctive silhouette, though violent river surges repeatedly knocked sculptures and entire stone spans into the water. Public transit over the arches evolved from horse-drawn trams to electric streetcars and motor buses before municipal authorities barred all vehicles. Major restoration work removed the roadway asphalt, converting the structure into an exclusively pedestrian zone.
