Municipal House stands on Náměstí Republiky as a civic building housing Smetana Hall beside the Powder Gate.

The site originally held the Royal Court palace, which housed Bohemian kings following construction under King Wenceslas. That medieval seat fell into abandonment and faced clearance before the modern civic complex arose in its place. Architects Osvald Polívka and Antonín Balšánek designed the finished halls, placing the civic landmark directly beside the historic Powder Gate.
