Long-term residents near Hradčany navigate tight ministerial security perimeters rather than open public grounds around this monumental diplomatic complex.
Humprecht Jan Czernin, an imperial envoy representing the Habsburg crown in Venice and Rome, acquired garden grounds previously held by the debt-burdened House of Lobkowicz. Czernin hired the Swiss-Italian designer Francesco Caratti to draft the palace layout, while builders Gione Decapaoli and Abraham Leuthner directed construction.
Stucco artisans Giovanni Maderna and Giovanni Battista Cometa yielded their finishing work on the interior walls to Francesco Peri and Antonio Travelli. The resulting structure expanded into the grandest baroque palace in Prague, transforming from a noble residence into the central office of Czechoslovak and Czech foreign affairs.
