Residents on the Strahov ridge trade the steep daily climb from the lower city for quiet abbey grounds and secluded garden paths.
The abbey began as a Premonstratensian settlement founded by Bishop Jindřich Zdík alongside Bohemian rulers. Clerics from the Rhine valley replaced initial timber halls with permanent stone structures centered on a Romanesque basilica. After severe fire damage and devastation during the Hussite wars, when local mobs burned liturgical furnishings and manuscripts, the complex stood largely dormant across multiple generations.
Abbot Jan Lohelius revitalised the institution by reclaiming lost estates, rebuilding dormitories, and replanting monastic gardens. Successor Kašpar Questenberg expanded the site further with cloisters, a working brewery, and a hospital. Questenberg also oversaw the transfer of Saint Norbert's relics from Magdeburg into the abbey church and supervised the completion of Saint Roch church commissioned by Emperor Rudolf.
