Residents in Nové Město share daily tram corridors with somber memorial traffic, balancing quiet side streets against the steady flow of people paying respects at the crypt.
The site in Nové Město holds layers of ecclesiastical rebuilding, beginning with medieval structures linked to Duke Bořivoj and the Zderaz monastic community. Hussite conflicts ruined the early complex, after which Catholic authorities established a clergy residence on the grounds. Architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer designed the surviving Baroque structure, which later transitioned into the head cathedral for the Orthodox community.
During wartime occupation, the underground crypt sheltered Czechoslovak paratroopers who carried out the mission against Reinhard Heydrich. Waffen-SS troops surrounded and assaulted the building, leading to a fatal defense where the trapped fighters perished rather than surrender. The subterranean chamber now operates as a dedicated national memorial museum, maintaining a somber sanctuary directly beneath regular parish services.
