Residents in the surrounding Old Town alleys adjust their daily work routines around the morning surge of walking tours passing through Bethlehem Square.
Wenceslas Kříž and John of Milheim established the chapel to host sermons exclusively in the Czech vernacular, challenging foreign ecclesiastical control in Bohemia. The structure served as a preaching hall rather than an official parish church. Jan Hus led the congregation as rector and preacher, drawing intense opposition that culminated in a papal order for demolition, which the Old Town council refused to execute.
The Jesuit order later took control of the site before parts of the deteriorating hall were dismantled and absorbed into residential apartments. State restorers eventually rebuilt the hall using surviving medieval masonry and pulpit remnants. Interior murals reproduce scenes based on Jan Hus's treatise De sex erroribus, while an asteroid identified from Kleť Observatory carries the chapel's name.
