About the place

Estates Theatre preserves an intact neoclassical performance space where classical drama, ballet, and opera continue in their historical setting.

Anton Haffenecker designed the building for Franz Anton von Nostitz-Rieneck to expand public cultural access during the Enlightenment. The neoclassical structure retains its historical interior and carries the Latin portal motto Patriae et Musis. Performances commenced with Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's tragedy Emilia Galotti, establishing the venue as a permanent municipal stage after earlier private playhouses closed.

The Bohemian Estates acquired the site before administrative shifts assigned the hall exclusively to a German ensemble as Deutsches Landestheater. Later incorporated into the National Theatre network and briefly designated the Tyl Theatre, the venue restored its historic name after comprehensive structural repairs. Opera, ballet, and drama ensembles now rotate repertory across this hall, the National Theatre, and Kolowrat Theatre.
