Living on this northern slope means tackling severe street gradients every day while commuting across the bay ridge.
Russian Hill originated as one of the primary high elevations across the bay settlement. The area took its name from a small burial site that gold-rush arrivals encountered at the crest, where visiting naval and merchant crews were interred during earlier decades. Settlers subsequently cleared the graves, but the title stayed attached to the northern ridge permanently.
Following integration into the territory, the slope developed into a prime residential quarter. Builders William H. Ranlett, Charles Homer, and Joseph H. Atkinson erected pioneer homes along the Vallejo Street Crest. The Atkinson House survived the historic earthquake and stands as an enduring Italianate structure from that initial construction boom.
Vehicular access across these heights created major transport challenges on the natural grades. Property owner Carl Henry proposed switchback curves along Lombard Street to reduce the incline, which had previously proved too sharp for standard transit. Today the paved turns manage vehicular descent down the residential hillside.
