South Africa's legislative capital functions as a major southern Atlantic container port and an expanding tech center.

The legislative capital houses the national parliament and preserves the highest density of Cape Dutch architecture, combining European and Indonesian structural traditions. Urban expansion stretches around Table Mountain from the Atlantic seaboard to the False Bay coast. Daily transit relies heavily on private vehicles and ride-hailing applications, as passenger rail links have contracted across the metropolitan area.

Corporate headquarters, tech startups, and renewable energy developers drive the local commercial core. Daily life revolves around a distinct culinary heritage shaped by Cape Malay bobotie, suburban bakeries serving koe'sisters, and an established roster of independent coffee roasteries. Winemaking remains active within municipal limits at heritage estates in Constantia, preserving vineyards planted during the colonial era.

Newcomers face sharp safety divides that shape basic routines. Municipal networks maintain continuous camera surveillance across central districts, yet pedestrians avoid walking after dark. Drivers keep doors locked and windows rolled up at intersections to prevent opportunistic theft. Outdoor recreation on mountain footpaths requires hiking in groups, while airport travel depends entirely on booked road transport.

Sıkça sorulanlar
Is Cape Town safe for tourists to walk around at night?

Central streets remain generally manageable on foot during the day, provided personal belongings remain out of sight. Walking outside after sundown carries elevated risks of robbery and mugging. Travelers should use pre-booked private transfers, metered taxis, or ride-hailing services directly between nighttime venues.

Kaynak: Wikivoyage
How do travelers get from the airport into central Cape Town?

Municipal public transit does not provide service connecting the airport terminal to the city. Arriving passengers travel by ride-hailing services, pre-booked private airport transfers, or licensed taxis. Arranging transport through established mobile applications or authorized booking desks avoids unregulated touts outside the terminal.

What should motorists know before driving in Cape Town?

Vehicles travel on the left side of the road across South Africa. Service station attendants pump fuel and wash windshields while motorists remain seated in their cars. Heavy traffic congestion frequently stalls major routes during peak commute periods, making navigation apps essential.

Kaynak: Wikivoyage
What precautions should drivers take against vehicle crime in Cape Town?

Smash-and-grab theft presents a recurring hazard at urban intersections and traffic signals. Drivers should keep vehicle doors locked, windows closed, and all luggage or electronic devices stored out of sight. When traveling between the airport and the city, motorists should stick to primary freeways and avoid stopping in unfamiliar areas.

Kaynak: Wikivoyage
Is it safe to hike Table Mountain alone?

Hikers should avoid walking alone, as isolated trails carry risks of robbery and accidental injury. Trail users should stick to designated paths and walk in groups for mutual safety. Mountain weather conditions can deteriorate abruptly, making warm and protective layers essential.

Kaynak: Wikivoyage
What local dishes should travelers try in Cape Town?

Cape Malay heritage shapes the culinary landscape, featuring spiced minced bobotie and spiced confectionery such as koe'sisters. The Gatsby, a crusty roll filled with hot chips and savory meats, is a signature takeaway meal across the peninsula. Coastal menus highlight fresh regional linefish, complemented by traditional sponge puddings such as malva pudding.

Can travelers easily find vegetarian and vegan food in Cape Town?

Plant-based dining is widely accessible throughout the metropolitan area. Most standard restaurants feature dedicated vegetarian dishes, and vegan alternatives are common across local menus. Kitchens generally adapt standard offerings upon request when dedicated plant-based choices are absent.

Kaynak: Wikivoyage
Should visitors use commuter trains to travel around Cape Town?

Foreign travelers are advised against using metropolitan commuter trains and metro lines due to personal safety concerns. Commuter rail services have also experienced ongoing disruptions and operational reductions. Ride-hailing vehicles and licensed taxis provide safer and more dependable transit around the urban area.

Where can visitors observe whales and dolphins near Cape Town?

Southern right whales and humpback whales visit coastal bays during their seasonal breeding periods, while orcas can be observed throughout the year. Shoreline lookouts and boat excursions around False Bay offer vantage points for viewing marine mammals. Endemic Heaviside's dolphins and dusky dolphins frequent the waters along the western coastline and near the ferry route to Robben Island.

What is there to do in Cape Town?

A bit of history. Cape Town was discovered thanks to the search for a new trade route from Europe to India in the 15th century. The name Cape Town translates to "cape-city," located at the edge of the Cape of Good Hope. Today, more than 4 million people live in Cape Town. It is a port city in the southwest of the Republic of South Africa, situated on the Cape Peninsula, washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Table Mountain towers over the city, with a cable car leading to its flat summit. From there, you get a stunning view of the city, the harbor where yachts dock, and Robben Island, famous for its museum in the building of the infamous prison where Nelson Mandela was once incarcerated. My favorite activity was going to the shopping mall; you can have a delicious meal there, exchange money safely, and, of course, go shopping. There are 2 large malls in Cape Town: Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre and Canal Walk. I recommend visiting both, and the first one is located by the port, offering a gorgeous view of the ocean. Once, we were lucky enough to catch a Maroon 5 concert at the Cape Town Stadium (the very stadium where the 2010 FIFA World Cup took place)! Also, during my stay there, I managed to visit The Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach (a beach where penguins have lived since 1982), and Bo-Kaap (a neighborhood of colorful houses in Cape Town).

I came here to change Cape Town , but Cape Town changed me..

The African continent is bordered by two oceans: the Atlantic and the Indian. Camps Bay is the most popular beach in Cape Town, offering views of Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles. It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, so the water is cold and the waves are huge. However, it is the perfect spot for surfing. For swimming, it is better to choose beaches along the Indian Ocean, as the water there is warm. I recommend visiting the seaside suburb of Hout Bay; it offers a stunning view of the bay. Definitely take a drive along Chapman's Peak Drive—it is the most beautiful rocky road in the world, with views of the blue ocean. I didn't want to leave at all; these were the best, brightest, and most fulfilling two weeks of my life. During this time, I met so many people, heard accents from all over the world, and my spoken English became better and more confident. I gained experience in a field that interests me. If you are still thinking about whether to participate in the Stay Africa volunteer project, just do it—you won't regret it!

Better late than never

South Africa is out of this world. No, really. It’s just trendy to say that about something that really hits you hard. Africa hits you in every sense of the word. I don't want to bore you with descriptions of nature and my sighs about how beautiful it is here, because you, my dear reader, will understand it yourself as soon as you arrive. I will be tactless at times, please forgive me in advance, for by nature I am extremely emotional and bipolar: either happy and cheerful, or in complete apathy. South Africa is also bipolar, but more on that later. I want to make this blog as useful as possible for those who are just planning to come here. You will learn all the realities of this country and this magical city - Cape Town. Briefly about me: my name is Kristina, I am 22 years old, I am from a small village of Novoorst in the Orenburg region, but I studied in Chelyabinsk. Last year I received a linguist diploma at South Ural State University, and over the last 3 years I spent 8 months in America and 8 months in Italy. Work, exchange studies, travel, you name it, and now it's time to challenge myself, to see the world beyond the beaten paths like America and Europe... Just kidding, I just went to my favorite IEC and asked them to send me somewhere, I wanted new sensations, adventures, and another dose of adrenaline. And here I am, two months later. I am starting this blog 1.5 weeks into my stay in Cape Town, because only now did the inspiration and time come to reflect on things and draw some first conclusions. But even such a short time here has been so intense that one could write about it endlessly. Cape Town makes you fall in love at first sight. Johannesburg, for instance, didn't make me fall in love, because we (I was flying with a girl named Irina, also from Chelyabinsk, we live together here now and are becoming friends) first flew there and had a crazy 1.5-hour layover (I beg you, don't repeat this, it's almost impossible to make it). Plus, before that, there was a 14 (!!!) hour layover in Abu Dhabi, and we weren't just tired, we looked like zombies. Irina's luggage arrived in Cape Town two days after us. Things like this happen often here. Welcome to South Africa. Next, you must follow this, my dear reader, when you find yourself at the airport in Johannesburg: DO NOT GIVE YOUR BOARDING PASS TO ANYONE, EVEN IF THE PERSON IS IN UNIFORM AND RESEMBLES AN AIRPORT EMPLOYEE. The head of our IEC, Ksenia, is an amazing woman; she prepares you for the trip better than I've ever been prepared for anything in my life. That's why I knew about such people who take your boarding pass, walk you to the gate, and don't give it back until you pay. This is Africa, baby; to them, you are a light-skinned tourist with your mouth open from African beauty and a full wallet of money (even if that's not the case, I flew here myself, I know). Locals will try to make money off you in any, believe me, ANY available and unavailable way. They couldn't squeeze money out of me, I am a tough Russian person ;D especially since you don't need any help at this airport if you just look at what is written on the signs. At the airport in Cape Town, everything wasn't as "fun," and a man with our names on a sign delivered us safely to the hostel. And at that moment, when we were driving from the airport to the city late at night, I fell in love with Cape Town. Sia – Chandelier was playing full blast on the radio, and we saw the lights of night-time Cape Town for the first time... Such moments are etched in your heart forever. Even now, listening to this song, I get goosebumps and see night-time Cape Town before my eyes... I’m gonna liiiiive like tomorrow doesn’t exiiiiiiiiist... Yes, that is exactly how Cape Towners live - one beautiful sunny day at a time.

KRISTINA

Kristina, Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod region "I have never lived anywhere else like I have here, having fun and enjoying life! And I won't let anyone spoil my pleasure!" Kristina DEFINITELY, THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA IS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING PLACES IN THE WORLD!!! For me, this is an undeniable truth! South Africa is beautiful! Magnificent!!! But before I found out about this, I had to cover a huge distance, which apparently gives the right to call South Africa the "Edge of the World" (judging by its distance from our country and my city). By airline — the one I flew with — it took a long, long time to get there! On the night of October 18th to 19th, 2008, I boarded a plane in Moscow, flight "Moscow—Doha". From Doha, I transferred to a flight to Johannesburg. And from there to Cape Town. Only on the evening of October 20th did my feet touch the promised land, the most extraordinary place on earth, the oldest, most beautiful, and first city of the country! I was tired of flying. Although the flight was amazing, and the plane was lovely (lots of free space, you can stretch your legs). Clean. The stewardesses were kind, constantly trying to give us something to drink or eat ???. And they did it about five times during the whole flight — I don't eat like that at home!!! So, for those who are hungry — you've come to the right place! I recommend choosing long flights — they will feed you! At the airport, we were met by representatives of the host organization (SASTS). They helped with the luggage. They drove us in comfort to the so-called SASTS-house, which became my final destination in Cape Town. This is... let's say, such an unusual place. For everyone (judging by the different reviews of the guys I was moved in with), it can produce an absolutely polar first impression. And what about mine? Generally positive! But not without "surprises". We had a good time on the first day. We had fun late into the night at the "ZULA" club, dancing. Hip-hop and rock were playing there. And nearby, from the restaurant side, the sounds of national South African songs could be heard, as we were told by the local guys we asked: "What is playing there?" We returned to the hostel only at four in the morning. Tired. I fell into the sweetest sleep, intending to get a good night's sleep. But that's where the first "surprise" lay in wait for me. After what seemed like a very short amount of time after I fell asleep, a noise reached my ears. First, the crash of a falling object. Then — even louder — a hissing stream of water!!! I jumped up, frightened. The girl on the neighboring bunk jumped up right after me. And it turned out to be simple: in the room where I was settled, there is a working shower cabin. And one of the roommates (and there were four of us placed there on two bunk beds) decided to take a shower. For some reason, she felt the need to take it right in the room, even though there are three more showers on the floor! Wash yourself — you don't want to! Moreover, looking at the clock, we found that she decided to do this not earlier, not later, but at eight in the morning!!! We were in shock! We couldn't fall asleep again, we had to get up. On Monday (the program is calculated so that it starts from the first day of the week), we were gathered at the SASTS office. They briefly told us about the country, the program under which each of us arrived and will be staying here for some time. And about what awaits us in this first week and later, when everyone scatters to different corners. By the way, from European countries, according to my observation, guys arrive more often as volunteers. Subsequently, they live in local families, work mainly as nannies, educators, or teachers. They don't have to worry about anything, they are fed and watered, but their work is unpaid. But they are 100% relaxed and enjoy life. And their programs, unlike ours, are designed for only three to four months. In my group, besides me, there were only two people on the

CAPE TOWN TRAVEL GUIDE

It is time to say and tell something specific about the city. I do not engage in plagiarism, and therefore I will quote excerpts from Ivan Zgersky's guidebook, the most interesting and important ones, in my opinion. "The oldest city in South Africa is located at the top of the Cape Peninsula, ending at the Cape of Good Hope. The name came from there, at first just Kaap (in Dutch — cape), then Kaapstad, and it turned into the English Cape Town. City-cape, cape-city. The Dutch arrived here in April 1652, three hundred sailors led by a commander named Jan van Riebeeck. The sailors were armed, but were not military as such. They were employees of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), with a 25-year contract. They were tasked with creating a transshipment point to supply the company's ships with food and fresh water. The place was chosen near the slope of a huge flat mountain, christened Table Mountain. It protected from the wind and provided fresh water necessary for the settlement. Its slopes were covered with centuries-old hardwood trees. Construction of a wooden fortress for temporary protection against predators began immediately. In 1666, a new stone fortress (Castle of Good Hope) was laid, which stands to this day as a museum and provincial ministry of defense. This is the oldest surviving European building in South Africa. It's wild to imagine, but they tried to demolish it three times, and even managed to partially destroy it. In the end, they had to declare the fortress a historical monument to save it from disappearing under the pressure of another shopping center. Visitors are immediately struck by many things in Cape Town. The impressive view of the city, spread along the Table Bay of the Atlantic Ocean, under the Table Mountain soaring into the sky. It is also the whitest (by the skin color of its inhabitants) of all the large cities in South Africa. The city is modern, but compact; the entire business center can be walked in an hour. It is divided by Strand Street, along which the beach used to run. In the 1960s, massive construction began, when whole hectares were reclaimed from the ocean, erecting high-rise buildings where there used to be water. The street separates two cities – the old one, built under the British, starting from 1806, and the modern one, after the 60s of the last century. It is intersected perpendicularly by the central street. Once it was a canal, but with the growth of the population, it began to be used for sewage disposal, and on summer days a stench hung over the city. The canal was walled up, and the water now flows through pipes into the ocean. The central street is divided by Strand Street into two halves — Adderley Street and Heerenchracht. Its upper half runs through the old part, and after Strand it becomes Heerenchracht — the Gentlemen's Promenade. It is better to start moving along it from the bottom, from the ocean. Stand with your back to the port. Ahead is the central street. It begins with a monument to the first Portuguese navigator who set foot on the cape, which later became the Cape of Good Hope. Bartolomeu Dias named it the Cape of Storms in 1488 and told the whole world about it. Nearby are two more monuments — to Jan van Riebeeck, the founder of the city, and his wife, Maria. The founder brought his wife and a small child with him to the first settlement. Having successfully founded the city, van Riebeeck received the post of governor of the island of Java, where he died. To your left is the railway station — trains depart from it to the whole country and beyond. Here also stands the famous Blue Train and the Rovos Rail — two luxury hotels on wheels that carry tourists around Africa. Then the street intersects with Strand and becomes Adderley. This is the old part of the city. Look at the famous flower market, which works all days and around the clock. Here you can see rare Protea, growing only in the Cape Province. You will see the central cathedral of the Dutch Reformed Ch

FAIRYTALE CAPE TOWN

I am in paradise! I’ve ended up in paradise! And I didn’t know, I didn’t think it could turn out like this! No, this doesn’t mean at all that this is it: that I’m staying here. But I adore Africa! And I will probably love it for the rest of my life. How silly are the people who are skeptical about South Africa and think it’s better to go to “tried and tested places.” (Well, we all know what kind of places those are, let’s not say their names out loud?!) Nick lent me his bike. Externally, it (the bicycle) looks quite decent. But in reality, it’s made of iron. Meaning it’s heavy as a horse. Its rear sprocket is shot, and who knows if it will last any longer? The front brake doesn’t work well, but that’s due to the wobble in the front wheel. But otherwise — it’s just super?! I rode it along the coast yesterday. I went through all of Bantry Bay and Clifton, but didn’t make it to Camps Bay. Another time. That’s where the city’s largest beach is. Even though it’s still the Atlantic. But that’s okay. People swim in the summer anyway. And to get to the Indian Ocean, you have to drive for three hours to Cape Agulhas and swim past it. The Indian Ocean is warmer than the Atlantic waters. I took some beautiful photos. The road lay, as usual in Cape Town, along the mountains. The surf, the Twelve Apostles mountains in a cap of clouds! October 13, 2008
