Konum hakkında

Automotive assembly plants drive the urban economy along Algoa Bay, pairing heavy industry with working docks and windy residential beaches.

Automotive manufacturing forms the backbone of the local economy. Global automakers including Volkswagen, Ford, and Isuzu assemble vehicles in municipal industrial zones, supported by component producers like Continental Tyres. Operations connect directly to shipping terminals in Algoa Bay and the industrial port at Coega, making the city a primary vehicle export center for sub-Saharan Africa.

Commuting across the metropolitan area requires private wheels or adaptability to local minibus taxis. A planned bus rapid transit network stalled during construction, leaving the Algoa Bus Company and privately run minibus routes as the remaining public transit options. Major road corridors link outward along the national coastal highway toward Cape Town, while the regional rail terminus connects trains toward Johannesburg.

Residential life centers on coastal suburbs such as Summerstrand and Humewood, situated near swimming spots at King's Beach and Hobie Beach. St George's Park hosts test cricket, while Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium stages professional rugby and football matches. Living here requires active security precautions against street crime and fraud, as municipal safety records reflect elevated violent crime rates across the metro.

STRAND

The town of Strand, located on the way to, say, Hermanus or Cape Agulhas, is famous for... Actually, I have no idea what it is famous for, or if it is famous at all! ? On Sunday morning, I was woken up by a phone call. “Semyon, hi! What are you doing?” I heard Irina’s cheerful and now familiar voice after picking up and pressing “answer”. “Huh? Me? Well… I… um, nothing yet!” I must have mumbled incoherently, my brain struggling to function after waking up. “What, are you sleeping or something?” my friend continued, just as cheerfully. “No… not anymore!” “Listen, Mahmud and I are heading to the beach! Want to come with us?” “Wait a sec,” I stammered, desperately but vainly trying to get my head in gear. Realizing that would probably take too long, I decided immediately, “Yes! I’ll go!” Why not, when invited? You shouldn’t miss a chance! No-no-no-no-no!!! “Alright then, we’ll pick you up in forty minutes!” concluded Ira. “Get ready!” “Okay.” And we hung up. I got up and shuffled off to wash. For the last week, I had spent most of my time working. Both at the club and, even more so, on my book (editing). And there was a lot of work ahead. So, a break was definitely in order. “Wherever we go,” I thought, “I’ll like it anyway! In all my time living in Cape Town, it has never happened that I went somewhere and didn’t like it! Especially if the place involved being close to nature. In this case, the ocean.” Mahmud stated with authority that the shores of the town of Strand (a rather cute town, by the way) are washed by the waters of the Indian Ocean. To which I countered that the “Indian” only begins after Cape Agulhas. “No, it’s the Indian in Strand! The water is warm!” he offered as an irrefutable argument. The water, indeed, turned out to be quite suitable for swimming. And if it weren’t for the strong wind, it would have been simply lovely! But I, despite everything, still went for a swim and was quite satisfied with it. And I didn’t bother proving the truth to Mahmud—that we were still off the Atlantic coast, even if quite close to the Indian one. I didn’t want to walk back to Cape Town! He might have kicked me out. ??? And besides, Mahmud is excusable; he’s not from here himself. He’s from Jordan, I think. And he has citizenship here now. If you look at a map or, if possible, from a helicopter—Strand is in a little nook, in a bay. Almost in the center between Cape Point and Cape Hangklip. But closer to Hangklip, and therefore to Cape Agulhas as well. That is why, because it’s closer and because it’s a nook, and also thanks to the warm current from the Indian Ocean that reaches these waters and even extends further—to the Cape of Good Hope, the water on the shores of Strand-city is warm. But, of course, not like in Port Elizabeth, East London, or especially in Durban. After sunbathing and swimming, we moved on towards Hermanus. Mahmud wanted to stop by a wine farm to buy some good wine. The farm turned out to be closed; it was their day off too. But we did see a beautiful view. The road wound into the mountains, along the mountains, and down from the mountains. The town of Strand spread out right below us. I had driven past it once or twice, but this was my first time actually visiting it. And I didn’t know that the water temperature in the ocean washing its shores was quite acceptable for swimming. The capital is Pretoria.

The capital's train station seemed to cut the city off from the rest of the world. The commuter train from Johannesburg shook us for over two hours, much, much longer than we could have imagined. By that time, we had run out of patience and doubted several times if we were even heading in the right direction. Had we boarded the right train?! It turned out we were right after all! The station looked old and worn from the inside. It felt as if Johannesburg ended there and a new world began — the world of the city of Pretoria. We stepped out onto the station square and looked around... Nothing! True, we were exhausted from the trip and could barely enjoy it. But it was clear: there was plenty to enjoy in this city. The most interesting thing: everything that seemed remarkable was to the right of the station exit. And to the left — well, just... just the city. We headed to the bus station to ask about tickets to Victoria Falls. There were tickets. Inexpensive ones. But only for tomorrow. We thought about it and decided: we could take them. We would definitely make it back by the 14th for Vitya's departure! — Well, shall we buy them and go look for a hotel?! — I suggested. — Let's do it the other way around! First, let's find a place to sleep, and then — get the tickets! — What's the difference? — What if we don't find a hotel? — We'll find one. I just don't know how much it will cost. Fine, let's do it your way! Just ask until what time the ticket office is open? — Until 8:30! — Vitya reported after checking. We looked at our watches: it was past 3 PM. — Okay, let's go. Let's just ask at the station information desk first, let them advise us on a hotel! — I suggested. That's what we did. They recommended one very close by, about two hundred meters from the station building — to the right and around the corner. — And what about the prices? — we asked the consultant. — Reasonable, — he replied. Everything was clear! Both of us took this "reasonable" with skepticism and started wandering around, looking for another hotel. — Black people, as soon as they see white people, think they have pockets full of money, so they can offer them something more expensive! — I shared my opinion, which had formed over the last few months. We searched. But either the place didn't suit us, or the price. We walked for about thirty or forty minutes. In the end, we decided to go and check out the place the black consultant had suggested. It turned out: HE WAS A GOOD MAN! And the hotel was lovely! They were having a discount month and we arrived two days before it ended, which meant we qualified for the discounts in every way! We rented a charming room cheaply with comfortable beds, a shower, and a wonderful view from the window! I was on cloud nine! Looking out the window, we immediately decided where we could go. To the right in the distance, the University of South Africa and the TV tower stood proudly. And to the left — about twice as far — the old government building, the Union Buildings. Huge, beautiful! On a hill. And even further left and closer to us — the city center. There was a beautiful high-rise. And I love high-rises! Euphoria swept over me. — Hooray!!!! — I shouted. Vitya was also beaming with happiness. We settled in. A refreshing shower, hot coffee with a sweet roll. A celebration of life and joy! And Pretoria immediately became ten times dearer! After the shower, I started jumping on the bed. From indescribable delight! At six, traveling light, we went for the tickets, taking only the money for them and Vitya's small camera, which fit easily in his shorts pocket. AND THERE WERE NO TICKETS TO VICTORIA FALLS! THEY WERE SOLD OUT! — Oh well, we'll go to Port Elizabeth tomorrow! — Vitya wasn't upset at all. But I was disappointed. — But we got so close to Victoria! Maybe I'll never have another chance to visit that waterfall! — Well, what can you do?! Yeah, it's fine! We'll go to the Indian Ocean, and then, on the bright side, while I'm here,
