The settlement was established under the name Tsaritsyn on the Volga trade route. The city was later renamed Stalingrad and eventually received its current name of Volgograd.

The Panorama Museum of the Battle of Stalingrad houses historic weapons, military gear, and a vast circular canvas depicting the fighting. On the same grounds stands Gerhardt's Mill, preserved in its ruined wartime condition. Across the street from the complex is Pavlov's House, an additional historic defensive position.

The urban street plan follows several long parallel routes extending along the western shore of the Volga. Reconstruction after the war created a modern layout without the narrow lanes found in older towns. These continuous transit avenues link northern industrial zones to southern districts.
