Informazioni sul luogo

Volgograd functions as a linear industrial center rebuilt around prominent memorial spaces.

Postwar reconstruction replaced the historical street grid with a linear layout oriented along parallel avenues. Daily transit relies on the Metrotram light rail system and major roadway corridors running between northern factory zones and southern districts. Finding small historical side streets is difficult because the vast majority of central neighborhoods were built anew after wartime devastation.

Commemorative landmarks shape everyday navigation across the central districts. The Mamayev Kurgan memorial complex rises above the residential tiers, hosting the Hall of Military Glory and eternal flame ceremonies. Alongside the riverside, preserved ruins like Gerhardt's Mill stand adjacent to modern exhibits. Summer heat and freezing winter temperatures require seasonal planning for outdoor walking.

Heavy industrial complexes remain operational across the northern rim, anchored by vehicle manufacturing, chemical plants, and the hydroelectric station. Navigation apps often fail to show accurate municipal bus routes, making reloadable transit cards essential for routine travel. Long-term residents balance affordable suburban housing against extended travel times along the linear road network.

My America

About 15 years ago, I couldn't even imagine that I would be studying English in the future. I remember watching foreign films and imagining myself speaking English fluently. Now, I am studying at VGSPU to become a foreign language teacher, and I realize that I have chosen the right path in life. With my knowledge of English, I can travel abroad freely, especially to America. I have always dreamed of going to America, but I never had the opportunity. Now, I am participating in this contest to make my American dream come true. America has always attracted me with its freedom. How is this freedom expressed? Watch American movies and you will understand everything. Life in America is very fun, in my opinion. You can do whatever you want, you can dress however you like, and you won't be afraid of people pointing fingers at you. I want to dive into this freedom headfirst, communicate with Americans, and give them a "High five!" I have never spoken to Americans in person, so my conversational English needs practice. I have an American pen pal, and he is inviting me to America! I imagine meeting his family, going shopping together, eating cornbread, and celebrating Halloween! I won't beat around the bush; I admit that I want to experience the atmosphere of another country. Just think: I am walking in shoes bought at the Tractor Market in Volgograd, walking the streets of America, hearing English speech all around me, seeing African Americans arguing on the street, and realizing: I AM IN AMERICA! American movies don't lie! I walk up to a store door and see the sign "CLOSED," but I don't get upset and just go to another store! The thought flashes through my head: "I am an ordinary student from the region who has never left Volgograd, and now I am in the USA!" But these are just dreams. If I went to America, I would hold real dollars in my hands (I have never held them in person!), I would meet Americans and realize that they are the same people, no different from us. Most importantly, I would improve my conversational English, and when applying for a job, I would write "Fluent" next to my English proficiency level without fearing that it's not entirely true. I would realize that I wasn't born in vain, that I have some mission to fulfill, and that there are people in America I am destined to meet. Do you believe in this? Maybe I am destined to go to America in 2016? Maybe my destiny awaits me in the form of a fun African American guy like Martin Lawrence, with whom I would publicly argue? These are all jokes, but who knows what awaits us...

DIFFERENT

September 26, 2008. TOUR of the TOWNSHIPS. I have never been on a more unusual tour in my life. Now, looking back and thinking about what I saw, I see everything differently. Listen, the amazing honesty of the Africans just stunned me today. Okay, everything in order... By the way, don't worry and don't be anxious if I suddenly disappear after this active week of posts. It's obvious: there were all kinds of tours, the road, many events. Sooner or later, the daily routine will begin. Do I hope for it?.. It's just that it might happen. I'll be busy looking for housing and work. To the point: in the morning we were picked up at «Ashanti» — our hostel — and taken on an excursion. First, we stopped by the museum of the city's history and the apartheid years, and then... Ooh! We drove through some... so to speak... city slums. And we saw the reverse side of civilization. It's interesting to remember, but it wasn't particularly interesting to see, smell, understand, and... something else and... Of course, I've long been used to our sheds behind the bathhouse and don't notice their shabbiness at all. Sometimes I even forget that they exist (although my own dwelling doesn't shine either...) In short – there's all sorts of things. People live differently. And here there is enough shabbiness, poverty, and lack of love for people. Well, judge for yourself: fifteen years have passed since the end of apartheid. We still can't forgive and fully accept the Germans after the Great Patriotic War and still look at them askance. And here... But still, guys! I have never seen such sweet (no, really!) black people in my life. In America, most of them look like they just climbed down from a palm tree. But here there are plenty of well-bred and absolutely adequate people. You can't help but notice this. Just as, on the other hand, you can't help but notice the mass of beggars, homeless people, and, accordingly, hooligans. Olga, a friend, told me shortly before the trip: «Since childhood, I've somehow been used to the words from the song 'Children, don't go for a walk in Africa!'» Today in the townships, I remembered that. But then we stopped by a local kindergarten. And we had fun with the children. And it was like a wordless: «There is life here too! And joy. And children!» True, I didn't want to play with them or pick them up. I can't do that right away, especially when there's a screaming cloud of them. I need to get to know and get used to a child a little, or for them to like me immediately and very much. But when there's a crowd of them, everyone jumping on you, squealing – it's hard to choose. It's a different matter with the children of friends and relatives. I'm used to them, and I love them. It's the same with adults: we won't throw ourselves into the arms of the first person we meet just because we felt like it! HOORAY! FOUND RUSSIANS! The news is just mega, right? It's one thing when you find them in England or America (where they are swarming), and quite another when you're in Cape Town, where there are only four other people besides you. Katya and Liza from Magnitogorsk, Irina from Volzhsky (a city across the river from Volgograd), and Lena from Kazakhstan. So far, I've only met and talked with Katya. I liked Katya. Alexey was here too, but he has already left (maybe he'll come again) — he is from Magnitogorsk, he was the first Russian of those I managed to contact who lived here and worked under the same program as me. EVERY DAY YOU LIVE AND ARE SURPRISED It's interesting to be a pioneer (or a pioneer ???). Who would you surprise today that some student just got ready and went to America? Or to England? Or even to France, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic? Someone will be surprised, someone won't. But to Africa?! Everyone was surprised, whoever I told about my desire to go. Although, actually, not everyone. Those who weren't surprised – were amazed! LOOKING FOR WORK I walk around all day (until recently I thought I would get a job as

Are you a part-time student? Are you 22 or older? Do you not remember your embassy application details and get confused with your answers? Is this your second degree? And you think you won't get a visa??? No!!! That's not true!!! I got mine!!!!

On March 25th, the Volgograd delegation tried their luck at the US Embassy walls! Of course, there were almost no questions for full-time students (under 20)... everyone passed the interview surprisingly easily!!! So if you are a full-time student and you are around 20 or younger... don't worry!!! Consider the visa already in your pocket!!! Unless, of course, you are a total IDIOT!!! But if you are a part-time student, there will be many, many questions for you!!! And your Summer Holidays depend on how you answer them :))) I was grilled at window #13 for about 3 minutes!!! The consul was very surprised by me and everything related to me: that I studied at a college and now at Volgograd University. And why I am 22 but only in my 2nd year, and why I, as a part-time student, am not actually working... (I had written that I was working on my application, but I said I wasn't). And why I don't have an Offer!!! In short, I had nothing!!! My chances were slim, but still, everything went okay!!! And the cherished "Have a nice summer" was said to me too!!!! So I wish all part-time students: don't worry, smile, but prepare for the interview very, very thoroughly!!!! Good luck to everyone!!!
