About the place

A monumental fountain anchors Piazza della Repubblica on the Viminal Hill through bronze mythological figures and central water jets.

The stone basin marks the grand terminus of Via Nazionale and showcases fresh water supplied by the restored ancient Aqua Marcia aqueduct commissioned under Pope Pius. Architect Alessandro Guerrieri designed the circular structure to replace an earlier provisional outlet, originally furnishing the outer rim with sculpted plaster lions.

Sculptor Mario Rutelli subsequently cast bronze figures of water nymphs to replace the plaster beasts, later adding a monumental central depiction of the god Glaucus. Municipal officials deemed Rutelli's initial central composition unsuitable and relocated that original group across the city to the public gardens of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
