About the place

Cardinal Scipione Borghese established the suburban estate to assemble classical antiquities and Renaissance masterpieces outside the city walls.

The gallery occupies Villa Borghese Pinciana, an estate conceived as a suburban retreat beyond Porta del Popolo. Architect Flaminio Ponzio developed the initial structure from sketches by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, while Flemish architect Giovanni Vasanzio designed the main casino with spolia salvaged from the Arch of Claudius.

Prince Marcantonio Borghese transformed the surrounding formal grounds into an English landscape park and collaborated with architect Antonio Asprucci to reorganize the collection into a public museum format. Early visitors recorded diverse menageries with peacocks, cranes, and ostriches alongside intricate water rivulets.

Prince Camillo Borghese subsequently relinquished premier antiquities to Napoleon, transferring famous works such as the Borghese Gladiator and the Borghese Hermaphroditus to the Louvre. The Italian government later acquired the entire estate, permanently separating the municipal parkland from the restricted gallery collection.
