About the place

The Column of Phocas stands isolated in the Forum as the final monument added to the ancient civic center.

The monument rises before the Rostra as the final imperial addition erected in the ancient Forum. Its fluted Corinthian marble shaft came from an earlier classical building and rests on a reused pedestal. Workers chipped away an older imperial dedication to Diocletian so the Exarch of Ravenna could honor Emperor Phocas with a gilded summit statue.

The gilded figure came down when the ruler was overthrown, yet the solitary pillar remained standing in its original place amid surrounding ruins. Silt and urban debris slowly buried the marble pedestal until archaeological work cleared the ground to the ancient paving, exposing the brick foundation that painters once never saw.
