About the place

Triumphal marble arches define imperial movement across central Rome.

The Roman Senate commissioned this monument between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill to honour Constantine after defeating Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge. Spanning the ancient triumphal route, the monument incorporates brick-faced concrete revetted in marble. Victorious processions passed through its bays toward the Forum Romanum and the Capitoline Hill, marking imperial authority over urban space.

Later centuries altered the structure through conflict and defensive repurposing. Noble families integrated the arch into private fortifications, and Lorenzino de' Medici mutilated several decorative heads. Modern athletes crossed beneath it as an Olympic marathon finish line, while recent storms brought physical damage from lightning strikes. Scholarly debates continue over whether sections reuse older imperial masonry.
