About the place

A papal basilica anchors Vatican City, standing directly above ancient burial grounds that shaped the surrounding Roman enclave.

The Renaissance church stands inside Vatican City as an independent enclave encircled by the Italian capital. Popes Nicholas and Julius initiated the current building to replace Emperor Constantine's decaying imperial church. That earlier structure featured an expansive colonnaded atrium, a cross-shaped nave, and an eastward entrance, establishing the sacred ground that the present basilica expanded across the Vatican hill.

Church tradition holds that the apostle Peter was crucified near the Egyptian obelisk in the Circus of Nero and buried on Mons Vaticanus across Via Cornelia. The surrounding ground served as an active burial site where early Christians sought graves close to the apostle. Excavations below the crypt commissioned by Pope Pius uncovered ancient shrines and bone fragments wrapped in gold-threaded fabric tinted with imperial purple.
