About the place

The monument anchors central Rome as a monumental tribute to Italian unification.

Giuseppe Sacconi designed the complex on the Capitoline Hill to honour King Victor Emmanuel II and celebrate the Risorgimento. Drawing inspiration from classical Hellenistic sanctuaries such as the Pergamon Altar, the structure functions as an elevated public forum. Terraced colonnades and wide staircases connect several levels above Piazza Venezia, creating a commanding civic space in the centre of the capital.
