About the place

Buckingham Palace operates as the administrative headquarters of the British monarch and an active royal residence in Westminster.

The complex functions as the working headquarters of the British monarchy, hosting state banquets, diplomatic receptions, and official audiences. Crowds gather outside during periods of national celebration and formal mourning. Beneath the courtyard and the southern wing, the river Tyburn flows through subterranean culverts. The ground originally formed marshland in the Manor of Ebury before entering crown ownership.

The estate developed over several rebuilds, starting from a royal mulberry garden planted for silk cultivation. John Sheffield commissioned the central mansion named Buckingham House, designed by William Winde with flanking service wings. The property later became a private retreat for Queen Charlotte, called The Queen's House, before major expansions converted the residence into a permanent palace for royal administration.
