About the place

Striped brickwork and Byzantine domes define the mother church of Catholicism across England and Wales.

The cathedral occupies ground once held by Tothill Fields Bridewell prison. Architect John Francis Bentley broke with English Gothic tradition by choosing Byzantine domes and banding. Catholic canon law barred consecration until donors cleared all construction debt. Because Byzantine decoration is applied directly to finished masonry rather than carved into the structure, vast brick vaults still await planned mosaic coverage.

The building functions as the seat of the Archbishop of Westminster and the principal Catholic church for England and Wales. Papal visits by John Paul and Benedict drew global focus to the nave, while Queen Elizabeth attended Choral Vespers, marking an unprecedented royal presence at a Catholic liturgy since the Reformation. Its campanile tower also provided the backdrop for Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Foreign Correspondent.
