About the place

Downing Street operates as the administrative core of British executive power behind heavy security barriers off Whitehall.

The complex combines separate historic properties: a mansion overlooking St James's Park known as the House at the Back, an adjoining town house, and a cottage. The site functions as the working executive office and official home of the British prime minister. Sir George Downing hired Christopher Wren to design the cul-de-sac, though contractors erected the terraces rapidly on soft ground with shallow foundations.

Before housing the modern government, the grounds formed part of the Cockpit Lodgings beside Whitehall Palace. Thomas Knyvet lived on this ground after arresting Guy Fawkes and halting the gunpowder treason. Early cabinet assemblies gathered secretly in converted theatrical rooms on the site. Today the sealed cul-de-sac prevents pedestrian passage into St James's Park, leaving the secure lane accessible only to authorized staff.
