A resident in Covent Garden trades peaceful pavements for immediate access to nightly ballet and opera programmes, dodging theatre crowds outside their front door.
The Royal Opera House houses The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet, and their resident orchestra in Covent Garden. Royal letters patent granted by King Charles established the company, allowing manager John Rich to erect the theatre using profits from staging The Beggar's Opera. The playhouse shared exclusive spoken drama rights with Drury Lane, provoking constant theatrical rivalry while establishing seasonal pantomime.
George Frideric Handel conducted major seasons on this stage, composing multiple operas specifically for the company and establishing annual performances of Messiah. Dancer Marie Sallé transformed classical choreography here by casting off her corset for Pygmalion. After fire destroyed the original auditorium, architect Robert Smirke designed a replacement, where audience riots forced management to withdraw ticket increases.
