About the place

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco preserves the complete decorative cycle painted by Tintoretto across its assembly halls.

Wealthy citizens established the confraternity under the patronage of San Rocco as protection against plague, selecting ground beside the church that held the saint's relics. Successive architects directed construction, passing the commission from Pietro Bon to Sante Lombardo, Antonio Scarpagnino, and Giangiacomo dei Grigi. Tintoretto covered the interior with his defining pictorial cycle.

The interior divides into monumental chambers reflecting Venetian civic life. Visitors enter from the campo into the Sala Terra, where an aisled nave leads toward a domed staircase. The upper level holds the Sala Superiore, an assembly hall anchored by a wooden altar. Adjoining doors lead into the Sala dell'Albergo, which accommodated governing councils known as the Banca and the Zonta beneath Tintoretto's canvases.
