About the place

San Francesco della Vigna stands in Castello on grounds originally donated as a vineyard, sharing the Franciscan presence in Venice with the Frari.

The complex occupies land in Castello given by Marco Ziani that once grew grapes, providing the church with its name. An early chapel commemorated the spot where tradition held that an angel greeted Saint Mark after a shipwreck. Marino da Pisa built a triple-nave Gothic church for the observant branch of the Franciscan order, keeping these friars apart from the conventual branch established across the city at the Frari.

Structural decline prompted a complete rebuilding driven by monastic reforms among the Observants and the personal interest of Doge Andrea Gritti, whose family residence stood next to the property. The Doge laid the foundation stone for the replacement church, and workers eventually roofed over the broad nave. Residents living nearby encounter an imposing Renaissance facade set directly against quiet neighborhood alleys.
