About the place

Santa Maria dei Miracoli stands in Cannaregio as an early Renaissance marble sanctuary built by Pietro Lombardo and his family.

The building originated from neighborhood veneration of an outdoor Madonna painting commissioned by Francesco Amadi from painter Niccolò di Pietro. Angelo Amadi displayed the image on his residential corner, where neighbors gathered to request divine assistance. The resulting local devotion prompted the community and the patron to commission architect Pietro Lombardo and his sons Tullio and Antonio to erect a dedicated church.

Planners later expanded the complex by founding an adjacent convent for nuns of Saint Clare to the east. An enclosed elevated walkway once linked the convent directly to the church interior gallery, though workers subsequently demolished the passage. Following extensive modern structural restoration, the site operates under the Chorus Association network alongside other ecclesiastical landmarks across the lagoon city.
