Residents treat la Piazza as an unavoidable transit corridor connecting municipal offices to the San Marco basin rather than an ornamental monument.

About the place

Piazza San Marco anchors Venetian public life as the principal gathering space and administrative core of the city.

The square and its adjoining Piazzetta form the administrative and religious core of Venice, opening directly onto the San Marco basin. While later arcades line the perimeter, the surviving pre-renaissance monuments comprise the basilica of St Mark, the Doge's Palace, and the monumental waterfront columns. Arcaded offices known as procuratie enclose the northern edge, originally built to lodge procurators managing municipal affairs.

The open stone expanse replaced a medieval terrain fragmented by waterways and orchards. A canal named Rio Baratario once bisected the grounds, the Piazzetta functioned as a maritime dock, and the original church of San Geminiano stood across the water. Doge Sebastiano Ziani eliminated the dividing stream, acquired adjacent church land, and cleared private buildings to expand the civic plaza westward from the basilica.
