About the place

An enclosed arched bridge across Rio di Palazzo connects Doge's Palace directly to the historic New Prison.

The span crosses Rio di Palazzo to join Doge's Palace with the New Prison, functioning historically as an enclosed conduit for moving detainees between judicial chambers and incarceration cells. This functional blueprint inspired municipal detention architecture abroad. In Pittsburgh, architect H. H. Richardson designed an elevated arched walkway for the Allegheny County Jail complex directly after the Venetian crossing.

Popular folklore turned the crossing into a romantic landmark through cinema and literature, establishing a tradition that partners kissing in a gondola beneath the bridge at sunset during the tolling of church bells will remain together. Composers and lyricists adopted the name repeatedly, from Jacques Offenbach in his comic opera to contemporary recordings by Robin Trower, Small Faces, and Roxy Music.
