About the place

Caffè Florian remains an operational salon on Piazza San Marco rather than a museum piece.

The establishment stands beneath the arches of the Procuratie Nuove on Piazza San Marco as the oldest continuously operating coffee house in Italy. It began as Alla Venezia Trionfante under Floriano Francesconi and quickly distinguished itself by admitting women, a policy that drew Casanova alongside playwright Carlo Goldoni and Goethe. Customers bought the local Gazzetta Veneta here across divided social classes.

State surveillance and political upheavals repeatedly altered the premises. Venetian State Inquisitors shuttered the business when French Jacobins adopted the tables as an international forum, prompting the owner to strip the founding name once French troops entered. Decades later, local patriots turned the Senate Hall into an operational base against Austrian rule, converting the gilded rooms into a field hospital for wounded insurgents.

Renovations by Lodovico Cadorin expanded the footprint from the initial rooms into specialized thematic salons, including the Chinese, Greek, Oriental, and Seasons halls. Authors including Charles Dickens, Lord Byron, and Marcel Proust frequented these decorated spaces. For people staying months in the city, the arcade functions as an early morning workstation before tourist foot traffic fills the piazza.
