Arcaded offices known as procuratie enclose the northern edge, originally built to lodge procurators managing municipal affairs.

The open stone expanse replaced a medieval terrain fragmented by waterways and orchards. A canal named Rio Baratario once bisected the grounds, the Piazzetta functioned as a maritime dock, and the original church of San Geminiano stood across the water.
