Residents crossing the imperial forum district steer routine grocery runs around excavated stone pits and detour past perimeter cordons during afternoon crowds.
Emperor Trajan commissioned the public complex using spoils captured during the Dacian military campaigns. The architect Apollodorus of Damascus, who had accompanied the imperial army on campaign, directed the architectural execution. Preparing the site demanded cutting away the natural saddle of land between the Capitoline and Quirinal hills, with excavated spoil transported beyond the city wall gate of Porta Collina.
Initial ground clearing may have started under Emperor Domitian before the forum reached full realization under Trajan. The monumental program integrated Trajan's Column alongside the adjoining Market of Trajan. Building works also transformed neighboring precincts through the reconstruction of Caesar's Forum, the erection of the Basilica Argentaria, and structural upgrades to the nearby Temple of Venus Genetrix.
