À propos du lieu

Palazzo Farnese stands as a monumental High Renaissance residence commissioned by the Farnese family.

Antonio da Sangallo the Younger planned the palace for Alessandro Farnese before conflict halted construction during the Sack of Rome. When Alessandro became pope, Michelangelo took charge of the upper story, adding the projecting cornice and the central architrave beneath the papal coat of arms. The facade faces Piazza Farnese, where ancient granite basins from the Baths of Caracalla serve as public fountains.

Architects Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola and Giacomo della Porta later expanded the complex with a porticoed rear facade, incorporating courtyard colonnades of Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns. Following periods of vacancy and wartime sequestration, the residence housed Queen Christina of Sweden, whose retinue damaged woodwork and stripped metal fittings. The Italian state now owns the property, leasing it to the French Embassy.
