Tenants living steps from Trajan's Forum trade quiet residential corridors for daily detours around excavation pits and tour groups.
The Roman Senate ordered the construction of the triumphal column to honor Emperor Trajan after the Dacian Wars. Master builder Apollodorus of Damascus supervised the engineering within Trajan's Forum, placing the monument just north of the Roman Forum. The completed monument stands as a freestanding civic landmark in the historical center, preserving an imperial triumph on permanent public display.
A continuous spiral bas-relief winds along the exterior of the freestanding column. This relief illustrates the conflicts between Roman forces and Dacians during imperial campaigns. Emperor Trajan commemorated his victory through this continuous sculpture, creating a distinctive architectural pattern that went on to inspire numerous commemorative victory columns in both ancient and modern times.
