À propos du lieu

Ponte Sant'Angelo carries pedestrian traffic across the river on ancient travertine arches.

Emperor Hadrian constructed the crossing to access his imperial mausoleum across the river. Travertine marble clads the Roman arches, which connect the rioni of Ponte and Borgo. Medieval pilgrims made the passage the primary conduit toward Saint Peter's Basilica after older river crossings collapsed. River embankment works later replaced the original access ramps with matching masonry arches while preserving the ancient core.

Severe crowding along the crossing led to historic traffic regulations, including separated lanes for pilgrims walking toward the basilica. A deadly crush forced authorities to demolish neighbouring houses and a triumphal arch to expand access. Toll revenues funded statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at the bridgehead. For generations, civic executioners exposed the bodies of condemned criminals near the southern entrance.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the series of marble angels lining the parapets, each bearing an instrument of the Passion. Papal patrons moved the master sculptor's personal carvings to another Roman church, leaving workshop versions on the river. Today the structure functions solely as a pedestrian thoroughfare. Long-term residents navigate persistent foot traffic, yet gain a tranquil walking route free of motor vehicles.
