About the place

Fire leveled the English royal residence at Westminster, leaving Banqueting House as the lone survivor of a sprawling palace quarter.

Cardinal Wolsey expanded York Place until the estate rivalled Lambeth Palace. King Henry seized the residence after Wolsey fell from power, turning the property into the primary royal seat. The crown added dedicated sporting grounds across the complex, creating an indoor tennis court, a bowling green, a cock fighting pit, and a tiltyard.

A catastrophic fire destroyed almost the entire complex, sparing only Banqueting House with its ceiling painted by Peter Paul Rubens. That hall witnessed the public execution of King Charles outside its windows. Today, government ministries occupy the royal footprint. Administrative headquarters stand over the old cock fighting pit, while parade grounds occupy the former tiltyard.
