Residents living beside the Palau de la Música Catalana adjust their daily routines around Orfeó Català performances that pack the surrounding narrow streets on concert nights.
Architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner designed the concert hall in the Catalan modernista style as the headquarters for Orfeó Català. The choral institution founded the venue to champion the Renaixença cultural movement. From the inaugural season, the institution dedicated its stage to Catalan composers while maintaining an international performance calendar that shaped Barcelona's municipal concert life.
The auditorium staged world premieres for major Spanish and European works, including Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez and piano suites by Enric Granados. Manuel de Falla and Roberto Gerhard debuted major compositions in the hall. Regular appearances by the Orquestra Pau Casals, cellist Pablo Casals, and pianist Alicia de Larrocha established the venue as a working laboratory for modern classical composition.
