Els Quatre Gats: what's nearby, how to get there and when to go · 2026

Tenants in the surrounding alleys trade quiet evenings and square footage for living beside Casa Martí, dodging tour crowds at the café doorstep to reach their apartments.

About the place

Bohemian intellectual life congregated inside Casa Martí, where Catalan modernists debated art and broke with academic conventions.

Pere Romeu established Els Quatre Gats inside Casa Martí, an ornate building designed by architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. Romeu modelled the venue after the Parisian cabaret Le Chat Noir, naming it after a Catalan idiom for societal outsiders. Backed by painters Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol, the tavern functioned as a cabaret, exhibition hall, and meeting place for figures such as Antoni Gaudí.

The venue became the heart of Catalan Modernisme by staging concerts, exhibitions, and literary gatherings. Pablo Picasso frequented the tavern during his youth, hanging his debut solo art exhibition in the dining hall and illustrating the outdoor street poster. Ramon Casas contributed a custom painting of a tandem bicycle with the city skyline, signaling that genuine artistic progress demands discarding convention.

New residents often treat the building merely as a tourist dining stop, unaware of its collapse and political revival. Romeu routinely gave away meals to fellow artists, forcing the business into bankruptcy. Decades after the shutdown, local entrepreneurs campaigned to restore Casa Martí following the end of the Franco regime, reclaiming the site as a restored cultural monument for democratic Catalonia.
