About the place

Adjoining medieval palaces on Montcada Street house the extensive formative collection of Pablo Picasso.

The museum originated through the initiative of Jaume Sabartes, who initially planned an institution in Malaga before Picasso redirected the project to Barcelona. Operating under the name of the Sabartes Collection, the institution bypassed central government hostility during the Franco regime with support from municipal leaders. Donations from personal holdings and contemporary artists formed the foundation of the permanent galleries.

Over time, the institution expanded beyond Palau Aguilar into adjacent medieval residences along Montcada Street, including Palau del Baro de Castellet and Palau Meca. The galleries display early academic studies, Blue Period canvases, and the Las Meninas interpretation series alongside gifts from Salvador Dali and Jacqueline Roque. Modern additions provide dedicated exhibition space, auditoriums, and print rooms.
