About the place

Antoni Gaudí redirected the church project toward an expiatory design funded exclusively by private donations.

The basilica originated as a standard Gothic revival project initiated by an association of Catholic devotees under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. Antoni Gaudí assumed control following Villar's resignation and overhauled the blueprint completely. Private contributions continue to finance the entire construction, leaving the pace of completion dependent on admission revenue and donations.

Conflict during the Spanish Civil War destroyed the original plaster models and architectural workshop. Subsequent directors reconstructed the layouts from salvaged fragments and modern interpretations. Today, automated numerical control milling machines cut the stone off-site, replacing manual masonry while preserving the structural load calculations intended by Gaudí.

Urban life around the site contends with complex underground infrastructure. A high-speed rail tunnel runs directly beside the foundation walls despite vocal protests from the church board and neighborhood groups regarding ground vibration. Inside the compound, a relocated schoolhouse once built for workers' children now stands alongside the active worship space.
