About the place

The Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran contains the official papal cathedra as the cathedral of Rome.

The complex functions outside Vatican City proper while maintaining extraterritorial status from Italy as property of the Holy See under the Lateran Treaty. Recognized as the only archbasilica in the world, the structure houses the seat of the bishop of Rome. An inscription above the portals marks the site as the mother and head of all churches globally, placing the administrative core of the diocese here.

Substantial archaeological foundations beneath the nave belong to the imperial cavalry bodyguard fort, dismantled after Constantine defeated Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. The surrounding land belonged to the noble Laterani family before imperial authorities confiscated the estate under Nero. The adjacent palace subsequently served as the principal papal residence across the Middle Ages.

Constantine transferred the residential palace to Pope Miltiades to host an episcopal synod that challenged Donatism. Pope Sylvester dedicated the cathedral to Christ the Savior, with John the Baptist and John the Evangelist joining as co-patrons. Medieval canons asserted that the high altar held the Ark of the Covenant, and the basilica ground plan served as the direct template for Christ Church in Canterbury.
