Residents learn to route daily errands through the central cortile at daybreak before ticket queues pack the stone colonnade near Piazza della Signoria.
Cosimo de' Medici commissioned Giorgio Vasari to construct the complex as centralized offices for civic magistrates, state agencies, and republican guilds. The name derives from these working administrative bureaus. Under Grand Duke Francesco, the upper levels shifted toward exhibition spaces for dynastic treasures, including classical sculptures and jewels assembled inside Bernardo Buontalenti's octagonal Tribuna.
Vasari built the long, narrow cortile with matching facades and unbroken cornices to emphasize perspective toward the river embankment. Architectural historians identify this open courtyard as Europe's earliest regularized streetscape. Sculptures of prominent artists fill the exterior colonnade niches, creating a public corridor where dense tourist queues routinely obstruct pedestrian movement beside Piazza della Signoria.
