About the place

The Romanesque complex on the hill combines monastic solitude with sweeping urban views.

The church stands on Mons Fiorentinus as a premier Tuscan Romanesque basilica, tracing its roots to an early Christian shrine. Tradition holds that the Armenian soldier Minias established a hermitage on this ridge after surviving execution trials before Emperor Decius. Bishop Alibrando initiated the grand stone construction with imperial funding, establishing an enduring religious sanctuary above the urban settlement.

Adjoining the sanctuary, an active Olivetan monastery continues uninterrupted daily work on the hill. The religious house transitioned through Benedictine and Cluniac oversight before passing to the Olivetan order. Members of the community sustain themselves by producing herbal teas, natural honey, and distilled liqueurs, selling these items directly to visitors from a dedicated retail shop beside the church steps.
