About the place

Giotto di Bondone shaped the bell tower as a polychrome monument, establishing a pivotal transition toward Italian Renaissance architecture.

The freestanding bell tower stands beside Florence Cathedral on Piazza del Duomo. Giotto di Bondone designed the structure to match the cathedral polychromy, replacing typical Gothic filigree with exterior geometric patterns. He incorporated white Carrara marble, green Prato marble, and red Siena marble across the lower walls.

Construction passed through several master builders after Giotto passed away. Andrea Pisano continued the work with lozenge panels and wall niches before the Black Death disrupted operations. Francesco Talenti later took charge, introducing large upper windows and finishing the roofline without the originally planned spire.

Visitors reach the summit terrace by climbing interior staircases rather than riding an elevator. The lookout delivers panoramic views across Florence and the surrounding Tuscan hills. Intricate bas-relief panels by Andrea Pisano and Luca della Robbia adorn the lower exterior, making the base an open-air sculpture gallery.
