About the place

Palazzo Strozzi represents Renaissance civic architecture built during intense political rivalry.

Filippo Strozzi the Elder commissioned the palace to assert his lineage against the rival Medici family upon returning from exile. Architect Benedetto da Maiano initiated the build, while Giuliano da Sangallo provided a wooden architectural model. The Strozzi family purchased and cleared numerous older buildings to assemble the required site.
