Residents crossing Piazza Santa Maria Novella trade morning station commuter crowds for quiet afternoons studying Ghirlandaio in an empty choir.
The chapel forms the main choir of Santa Maria Novella, replacing damaged earlier wall paintings by Andrea Orcagna. Francesco Sassetti originally sought the space to honour Saint Francis of Assisi, but the Dominican friars rejected that subject. The patronal rights passed from the impoverished Ricci family to Giovanni Tornabuoni, who commissioned scenes depicting the Virgin Mary alongside Saint John the Baptist.
Domenico Ghirlandaio mobilised the largest painting workshop in the city to execute the cycle alongside custom stained glass. His brothers Davide and Benedetto, his brother-in-law Sebastiano Mainardi, and the apprentice Michelangelo Buonarroti contributed to the walls. The original altarpiece left the church and remains divided between public galleries in Berlin and Munich, while surviving Orcagna fragments sit in the local museum.
