About the place

Florence preserves its judicial history and monumental Renaissance sculpture inside this former civic fortress.

The fortified stone palace began as the municipal headquarters for the city magistrate before serving as the police station and civic jail. Public executions occurred within the central open courtyard until the grand duke abolished the death penalty. Centuries of administrative use preserved the crenellated exterior and tower walls, which later provided the architectural blueprint for Palazzo Vecchio.
