The Jesuit presence in the city began when Duke Albert of Bavaria authorized the founding of Wilhelmsgymnasium. His successor, Duke William the Pious, commissioned the collegiate church to advance Counter Reformation doctrine. When European rulers later suppressed and banned the Jesuit order, the property passed to the Bavarian royal house, before ultimate transfer to the State of Bavaria upon the founding of the republic.
