About the place

The Residenz expanded outward from a medieval fortress into the largest urban palace in Germany, eventually replacing an entire urban quarter.

The Wittelsbach rulers founded the complex as a fortified stronghold called the Neuveste, funded by penalties against municipal rebels after an uprising. Rulers designed private exits toward the glacis to bypass city lanes during civil unrest. Over time, courtiers absorbed adjacent monasteries and barracks, layering Renaissance galleries, Baroque halls, and Neo-Classical facades over the Gothic cellar vaults.

Today the palace operates as an immense museum quarter spanning the Antiquarium sculpture hall, the Grottenhof wings, and the Kaiserhof courtyards. Annual visitor volumes rival Nymphenburg Palace while trailing alpine destinations like Neuschwanstein. Long-term residents treat the complex as a pedestrian thoroughfare, walking through royal courtyards between Max-Joseph-Platz and the gardens to bypass traffic.
