About the place

Old Peter anchors Munich as the oldest recorded parish church in the city.

Monastic life on Petersbergl predates the formal founding of Munich, establishing the hill as the historic origin point of the settlement. The original structure underwent Bavarian Romanesque construction and Gothic expansion before fire ruined the medieval edifice. Successive rebuilding added a Renaissance steeple to the prominent Alter Peter tower alongside a Baroque choir, making the landmark a visible compass across the central district.

Allied bombing inflicted heavy damage, requiring postwar reconstruction to rescue the interior art. The high altar features the Saint Peter sculpture by Erasmus Grasser, flanked by altars from Ignaz Günther and Gothic panels by Jan Polack. Restorers later renewed the expansive ceiling fresco crafted by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The sanctuary also preserves venerated relics belonging to Munditia and Erasmus of Formia.
